Cities look amazing in black and white. A lack of color adds definition to cityscapes, making the straight lines of roads and skyscrapers appear crisp and distinct. Black and white photography does more than simply mirror the greyness of the urban jungle landscape, it brings urban morphology and architecture into clear focus, while capturing the sense of isolation one can feel in a city, even when surrounded by thousands, even millions of people.
Below you’ll find 29 stunning black and white photographs taken in cities around the world, from Paris to New York, London and Tokyo. These fantastic images capture the world’s major cities as you’ve never seen them before. Hopefully they’ll inspire your own creative endeavors!
Norman Rockwell’s rosy illustrations of small town American life looked so photographic because his method was to copy photographs that he conceived and meticulously directed, working with various photographers and using friends and neighbors as his models. “The Runaway” (1958) is one example from the recently published Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera (Little, Brown and Company, 2009). More about Rockwell’s photo realism, including an image gallery, is currently on NPR’s web site. The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusettes is also hosting an exhibition, and according to NPR, will put Rockwell’s digitized photographic archive online at the end of the year.
Gehard Demetz is a mystery artist, the only thing that we know about him is that he was born in 1972, Italy, and that he currently lives in the mountains of Selva Gardena. Maybe this is the only thing that matters when you set an eye on his absolutely marvelous wooden sculptures, since you forget everything you may have in your mind. Why lie, this is not wood, this is the material of the dreams. And dreams are the perfect place for dark surrealism to rise. What are those lost children looking for? What’s the story that they hide? They look at you and it seems that they are inviting you to torture them. Or to pay for having tortured them in the past, as if they were the habitats of a forgotten orphanage where bad things were happening.
Totally strange and amazing type of art! Does these images reminds you at some places from your town?

Robert Bradford is certainly fond of toys! He is using them in order to make some of the most promising sculptures we have seen lately, full of color, irony and positive energy. Being in touch with the inner child we all have inside, he manages to keep our senses alert.

In of a world of vinyl, wood is king! That’s the belief behind Mimushi, the new wooden art toys that are meticulously crafted by hand, one by one. Mimushi is a 3-year-old character imported somewhere from Asia who was adopted by parents who up until now are unaware of his multiple, and ever multiplying personalities. So far he has only exteriorly experienced his many facets (in vinyl), but this new series is the most haunting of all: the Dauntless Gatekeepers. This squadron of fearless sumo warriors lives in his brain, opening and closing the doors between his endless embodiments. They choose who to let out and who to let in. They hold part of the key that might one day set him free. I must say that this sounds totally intriguing!
I love these black and white (few in sepia) photos taken by Lora Palmer. She is one gifted and prosperous artist. See for yourself.

Did you know that toys have life of their own? If you didn’t, check how it looks. Some of these toys look sad to me in this big big world.
Nature is always beautiful. These photos are showing the most beautiful moments captured with human eye.
I love these photos. I especially like the choice of colors. They give some cool and pleasant dimension. This is the kind of art that should be presented more in public.
